UMZIMVUBU MAYOR WELCOMES THE STATE OF DISASTER DECLARATION BY THE MINISTER OF COGTA

UMZIMVUBU MAYOR WELCOMES THE STATE OF DISASTER DECLARATION BY THE MINISTER
OF COGTA

The Mayor of Umzimvubu Local Municipality, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, has on February 14, welcomed the
state of disaster declaration by the Hon. Minister of COGTA, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. This follows
widespread showers that caused severe flooding across parts of the Alfred Nzo District last week, which
affected large parts of Umzimvubu.

“More than 20 wards were affected by the recent floods that we experienced last week. This includes
damage to road infrastructure, bridges, and collateral damage to 10 households. We applaud the Alfred
Nzo District Municipality for their urgent intervention in seeking ways to assist those that were left
homeless. We also expect a more effective engagement with the Department of Human Settlement in as
far as providing an emergency housing solution to the affected”, said Cllr Ndevu.

“I also wish to commend and thank the emergency service personnel, health care workers, municipal
workers, volunteers and community members who spent many hours, at great risk to themselves, saving
lives and providing support” added Cllr Ndevu.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) continues to provide communication support and thus we
continue to encourage residents to remain vigilant, as more severe thunderstorms and rains are expected
to hit the area this week.

Members of the public are further urged to report any disaster related incidents to the following hotline
numbers: EmaXesibeni – 039 254 0748 | KwaBhaca – 039 255 1401
