UMZIMVUBU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY AWARDED THE GREENEST MUNICIPALITY IN THE
EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE.
Umzimvubu Local Municipality is the 2023 Provincial winner of the Eastern Cape Greenest Municipality
Awards (GMC), walking away with R500 000.00 yet again. This was announced during the GMC Awards
that took place at the Regent Hotel in East London on the 10th February 2023.
The GMC forms part of the efforts by the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development,
Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), to capacitate and warn communities about the importance
of caring for the environment especially on the reduction of pollution. The competition seeks to change
attitudes by raising awareness and educating the public on good waste management practices; and to
obtain community buy-in and encourage an active participation by all stakeholders.
Umzimvubu Local Municipality is currently the 3rd Greenest Municipality in the country and the 1st in the
Eastern Cape Province. Herworship, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu accepted the award and reiterated on the
importance of keeping communities clean.
“Our achievement here today is a result of hard work and sheer dedication towards a clean environment.
We cannot overstate the importance of a green community as a scientific strategy to prevent global
warming. Through our botanical gardens and other green initiatives, we want to make greening a
fashionable solution to end our environmental challenges” said Umzimvubu Mayor, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu.
The Municipality is expected to take part in the national competition later this year. Details and more will
be communicated closer to the date.
