UMZIMVUBU MAYOR WELCOMES THE ROLLOUT OF THE BROADCASTING DIGITAL MIGRATION

Umzimvubu Mayor Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu welcomes the rollout of the Broadcasting Digital Migration by the Department of Communication and Digital Technologies in partnership with the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA), SENTECH and Post Office. The Broadcasting Digital migration is the migration of the broadcasting services from analogue broadcasting technology to digital technologies.

“The main objective of digital migration is to clear the radio frequency spectrum currently occupied by broadcasters to enable the provision of wireless mobile broadband services and other innovative applications. Therefore Set-Top-Boxes or decoders are to be used in the transition to enable free to air broadcasting services to migrate from analogue to digital television”, said the USSASA Alfred Nzo District Coordinator Mr Yanga Matam.

“Currently more than 177 households in three wards at KwaBhaca benefited and receive free set- top boxes, and more installation are currently underway throughout Umzimvubu wards. Households who qualify to be subsidised with the free set-top box must have a combined total income of R3 200 or less. These set-top box or decoders will be necessary if we want to continue watching television as South Africa is expected to switch to digital television transmission’’ said the Umzimvubu Mayor Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu.

To apply household members can visit the nearest Post Office with a valid television licence, identity book, proof of address and a proof of income in the form a salary slip or an affidavit. Households that do not qualify for the subsidy can buy digital TV reception decoders and television sets in a retail market.
