15 August 2017

As the country celebrates the year of OR Tambo: Unity in Action, Umzimvubu Local Municipality will be hosting a women’s month panel discussion on the 23rd of August 2017. In recognition of the role OR Tambo played in advancing the interests of women, August will be honored under the sub-theme: “Celebrating Women Overcoming Obstacles.” In line with this theme the municipality has prioritized the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment in the area. The much anticipated panel discussion includes four prominent women in the area namely Noluva Ntapo (Soapie Actress & IFA Ambassador), Nonceba Thom (Managing Director: Swift Travel & Tours Agency), Bukiwe Fanta (Gender Coordinator: Department of Education) and Nontsikelelo Ndlaku (Director: Strategic Development and Planning at Ntabankulu Local Municipality).

The objective of this discussion is to lead, motivate and inspire women across the area through a series of topics from each panelist. Phase 1 of the discussion includes presentations from funding agencies such as the National Empowerment Fund, Eastern Cape Development Agency and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency followed by discussions from the audience. These presentations seek to empower women in business while providing them with an effective information sharing platform. Phase 2 entails a vigorous discussion on societal ills such as the ongoing violence against women and children, inequality, constant conflicts in a relationship and thereafter panel beat practical solutions through broad discussions on the matters arising.

According to the honorable mayor Cllr B.P Mabengu,” Government has introduced the Gender Equality Bill to accelerate the empowerment of women and attain 50/50 gender parity for the country. Women are critical in our efforts to combat poverty and stimulate sustainable development. Over the past 23 years we’ve been working towards ensuring that women enjoy the same rights as their male counterparts in education, employment, property, inheritance and justice. The panel discussion serves to assist women in realizing their true potential as leaders, business owners and mothers of this unbalancing society.”

Media stakeholders are kindly invited to attend the discussion and urged to rsvp as follows:

Time: 10:00am
Place: KwaBhaca Town hall, KwaBhaca (Mount Frere)
