Umzimvubu Local Municipality is in a process of capacitating the community about the consumer rights. The Consumer Protection programme involves different stakeholders such as but not limited to SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health and the Department of Transport (Traffic Officers).

During a previous law enforcement programme conducted on the 20th April 18 in KwaBhaca, municipal law enforcement officers visited, Super Africa, Siyazama Super Market, Rhino Cash and Carry, Ingonyama Supermarket, Top Class , Bafana Bafana, Mt Frere Fruit and vege, Sondela Super Market, Majova Sallon , Amatola Super Market and Vovo Restaurant. It was the discovered that out of the 11 shops visited, 6 of them sold expired goods dating back to 2015.

According to the Honourable Mayor Cllr B. P Mabengu,” When products have expired, it is not possible to send them back to their suppliers as required by Law. However the municipality has no alternative option but to confiscate such products and dispose them.”

The municipality would like to urge all communities to stay alert and look at the expiry dates in all sold products before making a purchase.
