UMZIMVUBU TO ELECTRIFY MORE THAN 500 HOUSEHOLDS AT NGXABAXA VILLAGE

On the 10th of October 2018, Umzimvubu Local Municipality together with Eskom introduced a contractor to the community residents of Ngxabaxa Village in KwaBhaca formerly known as Mount Frere.

The 17 million project is set to commence in the current financial year and looks to create job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled labour. During a community engagement session held in a local primary school, Eskom said they would connect 20 amps per household.

According to the Mayor, Cllr Bulelwa Mabengu,” The municipality has the duty of creating decent living conditions by consistently delivering municipal services to the right quality and standard. This community will now be electrified after years of living in the dark with no lights or any other source of electricity. It’s unfortunate that this community had to rely on gas stoves and wood for cooking after years since the new dawn of democracy. However the municipality seeks to bring joy to this community by restoring the basic services as mandated by the bill of rights and the Constitution of the republic of South Africa.”

More contentment was brought to the community as another local contractor was introduced for the construction of a 6km access road. The 1.3 million project is expected to be complete within 8 months after the commencement date.

The project is coordinated by the municipality and will be working closely with the project steering committee in ensuring that the project is completed within the set timeframes. Local residents are also expected to benefit from this project in terms of employment.

“This access road is used by the community on a daily basis to reach work places, clinics and the local primary school only mention a few. When the weather is on our side, we travel with ease however when it rains, the road tends to become slippery and dangerous.” said Mrs Damane, a local senior resident in the area. More projects are yet to be handed over to local contractors in the current financial year.
