UMZIMVUBU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY MARKS THE FIRST VIRTUAL COUNCIL SEATING AMIDST THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN.


On the 29th of April 2020, Umzimvubu Local Municipality marked the first virtual council seating in history of the municipal council proceedings.The council meeting which normally rotates between the municipal town hall in KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni, embraced the opportunity to explore other mediums of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The Municipal Council that consists out of 64 members including Traditional Leaders were all available on their smart devices for the virtual seating that took place earlier today. The Municipal Speaker, Cllr Florida Ngonyolo in her opening address, acknowledged the severe economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local residents. In the same breath, she acknowledged the new innovations that came with it since the dawn of the lockdown.

“As we continue to preserve life more than our day to day operations, let us be mindful of a lot of SMME’s, employees and businesses that have taken a hard economic slump during this period.However we ought to remain confident in our government as it tries to mitigate the economic loss. In the same spirit, let us also acknowledge the new opportunities presented for the municipality to embrace online technologies” said the Speaker.

“On the 1st of May 2020, South Africa will progress to level 4 of the COVID-19 lockdown. However this does not mean that the lockdown is over. Our communities are still encouraged to observe the eased lockdown regulations until we reach level 1”she concluded.

“The municipality appreciates all residents that have adhered to the lockdown regulations and pleads with Law Enforcement Officers to take necessary action against those who are in contravention of these regulations” concluded the Municipal Manager, Mr Tobela Nota.
