A world class relaxation and functions park is officially opened by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor K.S. Phangwa and Eastern Cape Provincial Government MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs Mr. Mlibo Qoboshiyane. With clear blue skies, the weather is conducive for this occasion and Umzimvubu Community graces the event in much anticipation showing interest in the facility. Comprising of a Swimming Pool, Child Pond, Gymnasium, Outdoor Tennis Courts (Hard and Soft), and Indoor games, Sports Bar, Events Facility, Kiosk and Internet Café, Amphitheatre with a big outdoor screen as well as a Safe Parking Area. Built at the value of 8.7 million, the park contributed 33 EPWP related jobs for a duration of 13 months where 6 Women and 27 Men made up the 33 and 15 were youth. A sum of 1.5 million covered the wages. An investment of skills through training took place in fields such as occupational Health and Safety, HIV/Aids, Environmental Awareness, Landscaping Paving and Curbing as well as General Building where Certificates of recognition were awarded on the day of the opening. “Friends of the Park” partnership programme has been established which is a support system that will assist in the improvement, beautification, advocacy as well as general maintenance of the facility. The program is also aiming at individuals, Corporate Entities, Community-Based Organisations interested in partnering with ULM to advocate, fundraise and ensure that the park is sustained even for generations to come. MEC Qoboshiyane emphasized the proper handling of the park and taking responsibility of the facility. Ensure that the park is kept in a good condition so that it benefits generations to come. He highlighted the issue of socialism and the impact the park will have in uniting people of different walks in of ULM. Around 800 community members graced this event. Future plans and development of the park include building of a Chapel, a bridge or thoroughfare to a Sports field, Picnic and Braai Area as well as a Camping Site.
