The long awaited electricity of Sigidini in ward 04, Mt Ayliff have been switched-on by the Mayor of Umzimvubu Local Municipality. This happened in joint celebrations with the community of Tela from ward 03. The ceremony was held in Laduma Community Hall (Sigidini). “Today we are here to celebrate not to mourn, we all know that this haven’t been an easy journey but we are here to switch on our electricity”. Said Cllr Mpepanduku (ward04) while opening the ceremony.
Sigidini/ Tela Electrification has been one of the Umzimvubu electricity projects that delayed activation due to load shedding experienced by Eskom. This led to violent protest by members of the community, maliciously damaging municipal properties. “Our commuters need to understand that we (the Municipality) do not install electricity but Eskom who’s an agent appointed by government to light our communities”. Said Umzimvubu L.M. Mayor, Councilor Phangwa.
Government invested +-R18,4 million for Sigidini/ Tela and saw 857households being electrified with 50 youth from the area benefiting from jobs created by the project.
