Umzimvubu Local Municipality together with Eskom identified more than 350 households to be electrified. Umzimvubu Mayor, Cllr Sobane Mnukwa accompanied by the Portfolio head for Infrastructure and Development Planning, Cllr Gcinikhaya Makanda together with the Eskom representative handed over the project to a local contractor during public meetings held on the 1st – 2nd August 2019 at EmaXesibeni.

The identified households are situated in the following Villages:

- Ngwegweni Village | Ward 02
- Ntlavini Village | Ward 03
- Mnqwane Village | Ward 04
- Goso Village | Ward 09

A community resident from Ntlavini Village, Sonwabo Maphola, aged 46, expressed his gratitude on the initiative and said” We were beginning to think our kids are not meant to experience life like other kids. I say this because everything seems to revolve around electricity, even when applying for jobs. Today we feel recognized as fellow South African citizens and will look forward to more developmental projects in our area” he concluded.

Umzimvubu Mayor also shared positive sentiments and encouraged the community to work together with the elected Project Steering Committees (PSCs). He further said, “This project is the culmination of the government’s mandate to provide quality services to the community. We have been elected to represent the views and the needs of the community and in so doing; be held accountable. The project is yours and we encourage you to formally raise your concerns with the elected Public Steering Committee” he concluded.

The R 9 million estimated project is set to commence at the end of August 2019 and will be completed by the end of October 2019.
