On the 18th of June 2019, protesting residents from Mbodleni community in KwaBhaca previously known as Mount Frere, interrupted traffic flow on the N2, sighting reasons relating to road infrastructure.

The residents expressed their frustration on the busy N2, demanding that tar road linking them to Cedarville be constructed in the area. Ms Thokozile Sokhanyile, a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) accepted the petition on behalf of the Eastern Cape Premier.

Sokhanyile said, “I accepted the petition and made a commitment to the residents to respond within 14 days. From here I will deliver the petition to the Department of Transport and also consult the Office of the Premier on the matter” she concluded.

In addition to the above mentioned statement, Umzimvubu Mayor, Cllr S. Mnukwa called for calm during this period and asked community residents to honour the resolution made in their presence. He further said the demand for road and infrastructure is a basic plea that needs to be honoured to further pursue the values of back basics.
