Thousands of mouners, fans, lovers and products gathered at Mandileni Village, Ward 14 of Umzimvubu Local Municipality to bid farewell to their beloved DJ “Zaw-Zaw” Saba Mbixane as he was affectionately known. This philanthropist, cultural enthusiast, business man and farmer passed away in Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital after sustaining severe head injuries in a motorbike accident that occurred just outside his home town.

At the time of his death, this charismatic DJ commanded a listenership of around two million fans and had been working for the Eastern Cape based SABC Radio Station Umhlobo Wenene for numerous years. He was also the recipient of 4 consecutive Satma Awards in the category of Best Cultural Radio Presenter.

His funeral resembled more of a celebration of his life well lived rather than a typical funeral where Traditional and Cultural Groups performed all night at a night vigil held on Saturday evening and at the funeral on Sunday, 08 March 2015. Thousands of mourners, local villagers, UWFM Colleagues, musicians, traditional leaders, politicians Ministers and MEC gathered at a nearby field to celebrate this icon’s life. Amongst other dignitaries who were present at this funeral are Eastern Cape Premier, Mr. Phumulo Masualle, Deputy Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, O.R. Tambo District Municipality Mayor Cllr. Nomakhosazana Meth, Cosatu Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi, Xhosa King Mpendulo Sigcau, Western Pondoland King Ndamase ka Ndamase, EC Cahir of the House of Traditional Leaders Nkos’ Ngangomhlaba Matanzima, MPL’s, Mayors and Celebrities. This legend died at the age of 54, leaving behind his wife, kids, mother and family.
